Heraklion Airport taxi: fares and how it works

The taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals exit and runs day and night. To central Heraklion, plan on €20–25. To the resorts the meter adds up fast, so check the fares below before the bags go in the boot.

Taking a taxi at Heraklion Airport in 4 steps

  1. 1

    Walk out of arrivals

The rank is straight ahead on the forecourt. Ignore anyone offering a ride inside the terminal.

  2. 2

    Say the exact address

Hotel name and village: “Hersonissos” covers 10 km of coastline.

  3. 3

    Check the meter or price

In the city the meter runs; for long runs, agree the price before setting off.

  4. 4

    Pay by card or cash

Taxis must carry a card terminal. Keep €30–50 in cash in case it is “broken”.

How the airport taxi rank works

Walk out of the arrivals doors and the rank is right there on the forecourt; drivers take passengers in order. On August Saturdays, when charter flights land in waves, the queue can reach 20–30 minutes in the afternoon. In the city the meter must be on (tariff 1 by day, tariff 2 at night). For long trips to the resorts many drivers quote a price instead, which is fine as long as you agree it before the car moves.

Card payment

Greek taxis are required to carry a card terminal and give a receipt. In practice “the machine is broken” still happens: say you will pay by card before getting in, and keep some euros as a back-up.

Taxi or transfer from the airport?

Into Heraklion city, the taxi wins for one to three people: no booking, ten to twenty minutes, around €20–25. For Hersonissos and anything further east or west, compare with a pre-booked transfer: the price is fixed per car, the driver waits even if your flight is late, and you skip the summer queue. Our taxi prices to every resort article has the full list, and the transfers comparison puts taxi, bus and private driver side by side.

From your hotel back to the airport

Ask your hotel reception to call a taxi the evening before an early flight, especially in small resorts where cabs are scarce before 6 am. From the city centre, budget the same €20–25. Leave an extra 15 minutes in summer: the stretch past the airport on the national road jams at shift changes.
