Eating before or after security at Heraklion Airport?
After. Landside there is little beyond a café and kiosks, and the arrivals hall is tiny. Airside, the Schengen side (A gates) has the widest choice; the non-Schengen side (B gates) is smaller and gets crowded on summer evenings, so buy food and water as soon as you are through. Gate areas are explained on the departures page, and a quieter seat is in the lounges; plan your timing with how early to arrive.
Is there a McDonald’s at the airport?
No. Neither McDonald’s nor Burger King has an outlet in the terminal (October 2026). The nearest McDonald’s branches are in Heraklion city. Goody’s is the burger option at the airport.
What to buy at the airport duty free
Cretan extra-virgin olive oil, thyme honey, raki (tsikoudia) and Greek skincare brands are the classics. Prices for local food products are higher than in town; for cosmetics, Greek pharmacies in the city often run better offers than the airport. If you fly to the UK or another non-EU country, the duty-free allowances apply; within the EU, it is duty-paid shopping.
Olive oil and raki bought in town go in checked luggage. Bought after security, they come in a sealed bag you can carry on.
