How long does it take to get through Heraklion Airport?
On a summer Saturday the sequence looks like this: 20–40 minutes in the bag-drop queue for a charter flight, 10–30 minutes at security, then for non-Schengen flights 10–30 minutes at passport control, longer when several UK flights leave in the same hour. On a weekday in May the whole thing can take 25 minutes. Since the EU Entry/Exit System started in autumn 2025, non-EU passengers are also checked against the system on exit, which adds a little time at the booths.
When is HER busiest?
Saturdays and Sundays from late morning to early evening between June and September, when tour operators turn their planes round in waves. The B (non-Schengen) gate area is the tightest spot: seats run out, so buy water and food on the way. Early-morning departures (before 8 am) are usually calmer at security but the check-in desks open in a rush.
The road past the airport slows at rush hour. From Hersonissos or Malia leave 40 minutes, from Agios Nikolaos 1 h 15. A transfer booked for a set time removes the guesswork; see also taxi fares.
Ways to save time at the airport
- Check in online and travel with cabin bags if you can: you skip the longest queue.
- Have passports ready before the B-gate passport control; a family looking for documents slows the whole line.
- Return rental cars with 15 minutes to spare; the check in the car park is quick but not instant (car rental tips).
- Eat before you go: food is limited and pricey (restaurants and shops).
