Fly to Sitia instead?
Sitia airport is close to town but served mainly by domestic flights, with very limited international routes. If one fits your dates, great; otherwise Heraklion with a rental car is the reliable option. Compare the island’s airports on Crete airports.
Sitia on arrival: what to know
Sitia is a relaxed harbour town at the eastern end of Crete, far from the big resorts. The seafront promenade, the small Venetian fortress (Kazarma) and a long town beach are all walkable. Most visitors use it as a base for the far east of the island.
What to see near Sitia
- Vai (about 30 min): the palm-forest beach.
- Toplou monastery (about 20 min): a fortified monastery on the road to Vai.
- Kato Zakros (about 1 h): a Minoan palace site by the sea and the Gorge of the Dead.
- Ierapetra (about 1 h): the southernmost town in Europe, on the Libyan Sea.
Buses are sparse in this corner of Crete, so a rental car from Heraklion Airport makes the most sense.
